Polanski drugged and assaulted a thirteen-year-old. Payne preyed on sick children in hospital. There is no evidence that Wilde assaulted anyone, or did anything against their will.

I agree that Fr P deserved to be jailed, but so did Oscar Wilde, Roman Polanski etc.

The point of my article seems to have been lost on you. Or perhaps you are not really interested in my point, just in being provocative. Payne deserved to be jailed, and should not have been released early.

Lots of priests have a deluded sentimental attachment to the children or adolescents that they get involved with. Psychologically they are not very different from Oscar. Dermod could do a wonderful apologia for Fr Payne, for example.

Shockingly, I’ve only just seen this. But then, I’m probably sulking because you never answer the landline these days.

You know where I stand on this, but if more gay marriage advocates were as open-hearted, realistic as you – and said things like this in public – I might be a supporter of it myself.

I suspect though that if we could ‘fast-forward’ to ‘full equality’ – and, it needs to be admitted, full respectability – to an Ireland (or England) where gay marriage has been ratified, we wouldn’t find that things had loosened up, that all the hang-ups and furious accusations about speaking the truth of male-male couples in front of straight people had gone.

We might find instead that marriage and full respectability had made gay men more dishonest amongst themselves. Gay marriage makes honest women of gay men.
